Open Wounds and Coarse Winters - The Fire Inside PictureEast 2025 Review

The Fire Inside, Rachel Morrison

The Fire Inside captures the resilience of Flint, Michigan, through Clarissa ‘T-Rex’ Shields’ journey to London 2012 Olympic boxing glory. Captured through the perspective of Ryan Destiny, whose wide-eyed toughness embraces every conversation like an Olympic final, The Fire Inside is as tough as its name suggests. Director Rachel Morrison balances boxing tropes that threaten not to land, whilst sewing heavyweight themes of race, gender, and class into the story. However, an introspective, emotional third act lands like an unexpected uppercut.
